2.26pm, Thursday 25 June, 2009 was a very sad time for the world as it saw the untimely death of Michael Joseph Jackson aka 'The King of Pop' at only 50 years of age in Los Angeles, California after suffering from cardiac arrest. The day has also been famously called: 'The day the music died'.
Michael Jackson was a huge icon growing up in the 1980's as his music like no other musician crossed the racial barriers with people worldwide witnessing his natural talent rather paying attention to his skin colour.
I wanted to celebrate, rather than commisserate the passing of Michael Jackson and being a professionally trained graphic designer I set myself a personal brief to create a fitting tribute. Initially I looked upon words to sum up MJ and after a few drafts the following seemed the most apt: 'Icon', 'American' and 'Inspirational'. It was these words that then led me to look at one of the most iconic American logos ever designed, the famous ‘I love New York’ logo created by American designer, Milton Glaser.
Sometimes the best ideas are the simple ones and thus I came up with 'I heart MJ' logo. Subsequently the design has been chosen by Dizzy Jam and made into t-shirts with 10% of all earnings being donated to The British Heart Foundation which I thought was appropriate.
